Strengthening Judicial Independence: A Historical Perspective

Attorney General Anil Nandlall emphasized the PPP/C Government’s commitment to reinforcing the judiciary’s independence throughout its history in office.

He asserted that there has never been an attempt to influence the courts, stifle freedom of speech, or impede access to justice.

According to Nandlall, since taking office, the PPP/C Government has introduced nearly 200 amendments to the 1980 constitution, aimed at empowering the judiciary by curbing the authority of the Executive branch of Government.

One notable reform highlighted by the Attorney General is the judiciary’s autonomy in determining its annual budget.

Nandlall made these remarks during a television broadcast commemorating ‘Celebrating October 5 – The Return to Democracy in Guyana,’ which aired on Thursday.

The PPP/C Government’s approach to strengthening the judiciary and safeguarding its independence is a pivotal aspect of Guyana’s democratic progress.
