The ExxonMobil/New Era Entertainment third annual Futsal tournament kicked off with thrilling matches at the Retrieve Hard Court, where the Spaniards delivered a commanding performance, crushing Old Kala 19-2.
Shaka Lewis and Denzil Pryce led the charge, scoring seven and five goals respectively in the one-sided affair.
The opening night also featured a nail-biting 6-5 victory by Tigers over AHSASA and a 4-2 win by Silver Bullets against Hardball.
One of the evening’s highlights was a high-scoring draw between One Side and Bomberz, which ended in a 7-all stalemate after regulation time.
President of the Upper Demerara Football Association, Wainewright Bethune, praised the New Era Entertainment Organization for its dedication to promoting football in all formats.
Bethune also encouraged players to display hard work and fairness throughout the tournament.
Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueria highlighted the tournament’s growth, emphasizing the discovery of new talents.
He also urged the promoters to consider organizing a similar event for women.
ExxonMobil’s Public and Government Affairs and Community Relations Advisor, Ryan Hoppie, reiterated the company’s commitment to youth and community development, describing the tournament as an initiative that enhances lives in the region.
The competition continues Friday night at the same venue, with the ultimate winner set to take home one million dollars.
Additionally, the Most Valuable Player will receive a brand-new scooter.
