Solar Farm Commissioned in Mahdia

December 7, 2024

Guyana is advancing towards a renewable energy future with the commissioning of a 0.65-megawatt grid-forming solar photovoltaic farm in Mahdia, Region Eight.

The $362.41 million project, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, aims to provide sustainable energy, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions.

The solar farm is projected to save $80.5 million annually by cutting diesel consumption by over 309,000 liters and reducing carbon emissions by 672,561 kilograms.

With a 1,500-kWh battery energy storage system, it will supply 935 MWh of electricity annually, benefiting approximately 3,000 residents.

The farm will also support Mahdia’s existing mini-grid, ensuring stable power even during peak demand.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to bridge the energy divide between the Hinterland and Coastland.

He also pointed out that the Mahdia solar farm is part of a larger initiative that includes solar installations in Lethem and Bartica, with additional improvements planned for Wakenaam, Leguan, and other regions.
