Soca Heart Project Launches 5K and 10K Walk/Run to Combat Cardiovascular Disease in Guyana

Stride592 is set to host a 5K and 10K walk/run on Sunday, September 29, as part of the newly launched Soca Heart Project.

This initiative aims to motivate citizens to engage in more physical activities such as walking, jogging, and running.

Guyana has recorded the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in the Caribbean, with ischemic heart disease identified as the leading cause of death.

In response, Onika Jervis, Chairperson of the Soca Heart Project and Founder of Stride592, stated that their goal is to address this health crisis directly through initiatives like the upcoming event.

The Soca Heart Project is a three-year initiative designed to unite the health community, gather resources, and encourage individuals to improve their heart health through active lifestyles.

The Soca Heart Walk/Run is a significant step toward achieving these objectives.

Participants in the event will receive a package that includes a beautiful medal, a t-shirt, and access to food after the run.

Additionally, a farmers’ market and a health summit will provide opportunities to meet doctors, hear informative stories, and learn about healthy food options.

The Soca Heart initiative is a collaboration involving the Ministry of Health, Stride592, Georgetown Public Hospital, and the Caribbean Heart Institute.

Their campaign slogan for 2024 is “Know your numbers, make a plan.”

The walk/run will commence at 6 a.m. from the Scouts Association ground on Woolford Avenue.
