Skills training programme launched for persons with disabilities

Under the theme Creating a Bright Future for All, the Office of the Prime Minister, through its Industry and Innovation Unit, launched an ICT-inclusive skills training program for persons with disabilities.

The launch occurred on Friday at the Empower Guyana Center in Palmyra, Berbice. Delivering the feature address, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh noted the importance of empowering persons with disability.

He pointed out that while technology continues to advance rapidly, these individuals are not being left behind as opportunities are available to support and enhance their participation.

“This is the power of technology. Today, you have artificial intelligence, AI. I don’t know if you have explored the power of artificial intelligence. You have AI, but today AI has the power to answer almost any question you want to ask the computer,” he pointed out.

Dr. Singh also pointed to the government’s expansion of ICT services, including President Dr. Irfan Ali’s liberalisation of the telecommunications sector.

“No matter which region you are living in, no matter whether you can see or cannot see, no matter whether you move around with your legs or you move around with a wheelchair or you move around with crutches, every single citizen must be able to access opportunity and be able to uplift themselves,” he said.

The minister urged participants to fully engage in the program and take full advantage of the opportunities for skill development.
