Significant strides are being made to strengthen Guyana’s national security, with Prime Minister Mark Phillips underscoring the government’s continued investment in those who serve and protect the nation.
Speaking at the opening of the National Defense Institute’s Certificate in Defense Studies Programme, Prime Minister, retired Brigadier Mark Phillips affirmed that advances are being made in national security locally.
He also expressed the government’s philosophy that national security must be people centered.
The former GDF Chief of Staff noted that true strength lies not only in equipment or infrastructure, but in the discipline and awareness of those tasked with safeguarding the country.
“It is the security of the people that matters most. So today is not simply the launch of a new program rather it marks a meaningful step forward in our country’s development and how we prepare for the future of Guyana’s national security,” the PM said.
The 16-week Certificate in Defense Studies programme brings together ranks from across the joint services and is designed to develop strategic thinkers, strengthen leadership, and improve decision-making within the security sector. The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of collaboration among the disciplined services, noting that the institute provides a critical platform for joint training and coordination.
“This shared learning environment strengthens coordination, builds mutual understanding and fosters a unified approach to national security,” he added.
The government, he said, remains committed to investing in capacity building, making sure that the disciplined service is resilient and equipped to respond to both current and emerging challenges.
