Significant Rise in Interest in Teaching, Education Minister Reports

By Nakasia Logan | January 11, 2025

Education Minister Priya Manickchand has highlighted a positive trend in Guyana’s education sector, with a noticeable increase in the number of individuals aspiring to become teachers.

In a 2024 review of the education system, the Minister shared that this rise is a result of several key factors, including improved incentives and the growing appeal of the teaching profession.

Minister Manickchand confirmed that the number of teachers in Guyana has increased significantly, from fewer than 10,000 teachers when she assumed office to nearly 15,000 today.

She also pointed out that there has been no significant movement of teachers leaving the profession, with fewer than 100 non-graduate teachers resigning last year, a figure that is consistent with previous years.

A major factor contributing to the rise in interest is the substantial increase in stipends for trainee teachers.

Previously, trainees received under $10,000 per month; however, they now earn a starting teacher’s salary, which is more than $100,000, making the profession more attractive to aspiring educators.

Additionally, Minister Manickchand noted that many teachers from private schools have expressed interest in moving to the public school system, citing better working conditions, improved salaries, and greater job security.

Chief Education Officer, Saddam Hussein, also mentioned that several schools along the coast are currently overstaffed, which reflects the increased demand for teachers in Guyana.

This surge in interest is a hopeful sign for the future of Guyana’s education system, as more individuals are drawn to the profession thanks to enhanced incentives, better pay, and a positive outlook for education in the country.
