Fiancé in custody for shooting of Berbice woman; victim in critical condition (Newsroom)

A shocking incident occurred in Corentyne, Berbice, as 32-year-old Ashmin Mahadeo was shot in the neck, leaving her in critical condition at the ICU of Georgetown Public Hospital.

The suspect, with whom she shared a seven-year common-law relationship, has been taken into custody.

Region Six Commander, Shivpersaud Bacchus, confirmed that investigations are underway, but refrained from providing specific details about the case.

It has been reported that the division lacks the necessary equipment for ballistic testing and gunpowder residue analysis, hampering the progress of the investigation.

On the day of the incident, both Mahadeo and the suspect left her parent’s Williamsburg home, with the intention of getting her nails done.

Shortly after their departure, a loud explosion was heard by family members, leading them to discover Mahadeo injured and motionless at the gate.

The suspect immediately alerted relatives and returned to the scene.

It was revealed that Mahadeo had been shot in the back of her neck, with the bullet exiting and hitting an object in the family yard.

Both the victim’s and the suspect’s cell phones were missing, but were later discovered in a plastic bag in the suspect’s Ministry of Agriculture vehicle.

The suspect has been released on $300,000 bail while investigations continue.
