The Guyana Association of Private Security Organizations (GAPSO) held its first-ever awards ceremony last evening, celebrating the contributions and achievements of private security firms across the country.

The event recognized outstanding performers in various categories, with Sheriff Security Services emerging as the most awarded company of the night.

Among the prestigious awards handed out were the President’s Award, which was presented to Professional Guard Services, and the Lifetime Achievement Award, bestowed upon Maurice Amres for his longstanding dedication to the security sector.

The Leading Visionary in Private Security of the Year award went to Amir Ahmad of Sheriff Security Services.

Sheriff Security Services walked away with over 10 awards, including Best Maritime Service Provider, Best New Security Product, and Best Alarm Monitoring Service Provider, solidifying its position as a leader in the industry.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Errol Watts, who addressed the ceremony, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Guyana Police Force and private security agencies.

He expressed the Force’s commitment to working with security firms to ensure that the standards of private security in Guyana are upheld.

The ceremony also saw National Security Advisor, Captain Gerry Gouveia, urging GAPSO to take a more active role in developing the security sector.

He encouraged members of the organization to engage in regular meetings with the Police Commissioner, establish a code of conduct for members, and ensure that all security personnel are properly screened and accredited by the police.

In November, GAPSO signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Trinidad and Tobago Private Security Organization, aiming to enhance professionalism and standards within Guyana’s private security sector.

This collaboration seeks to address growing concerns regarding the suitability of local security personnel, especially with the expansion of the oil and gas industry.

Founded in 1996 by four companies, GAPSO continues to be a pivotal force in shaping the future of private security in Guyana.
