Guyanese fast bowler Shamar Joseph made a stunning debut for the West Indies against Australia, becoming only the second player to achieve a five-wicket haul on debut against Australia.
The Windies resumed the match with an overnight score of 59 for 2, and Joseph played a crucial role in dismissing Australia for 283 on day two, with Travis Head scoring 119.
Joseph, who had already taken wickets on day one, continued his excellent performance by claiming the wickets of Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Lyon.
He finished with figures of five for 94 from 20 overs.
His achievement marks him as the second West Indian to take five wickets on debut, following Darren Sammy’s feat in 2007 against England.
Despite Joseph’s outstanding bowling performance, the Windies faced batting troubles and closed the day at 73 for 6 in their second innings, still trailing by 22 runs.
West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua Da Silva expressed disappointment with the batting performance, acknowledging a shaky display.
Da Silva praised Joseph’s talent and hoped to find positives from the match despite the challenges faced by the Windies.
With questions surrounding the team’s experience, Da Silva emphasized the need to face the best and continue putting effort for West Indies’ success.
