The 2024 Senior Caribbean Area Squash Association Championships officially began on Wednesday, with an opening ceremony that marked the start of team events at both the Georgetown Club and the National Racquet Centre.
The ceremony, which followed the completion of individual events, featured an energetic display from the participating teams.
The event was notable for its vibrant atmosphere and competitive spirit, reflecting the high level of squash talent in the Caribbean.
During the ceremony, Minister of Sport Charles Ramson Jr. encouraged the Guyana Squash Association to pursue hosting more Caribbean championships in the future, underscoring the role of sports in fostering regional unity and development.
David Fernandes, President of the Guyana Squash Association, acknowledged the significant support from Guyana’s sports authorities and highlighted the potential for Caribbean squash to achieve Olympic success.
He also emphasized the unifying and nation-building impact of sports.
In the individual competitions, Guyana achieved notable results with Marry Fung-A-Fat earning a silver medal and Alex Arjoon securing bronze.
The doubles events saw Guyana excel further, with gold medals awarded to Ashley DeGroot and Ashley Khalil in the women’s doubles, while Alex Arjoon and Mary Fung-A-Fat took silver in the mixed doubles.
The men’s doubles saw Jason Ray Khalil and Samuel Ince-Carvahal claim bronze.
The opening ceremony was attended by Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle and other prominent officials from the National Sports Commission, marking a significant start to the championships.
