Efforts to connect Guyana’s second power ship to the national grid are progressing steadily, with the project expected to be completed before Christmas.

The ship is currently docked at the Ruimveldt Sugar Terminal, where a 3.9-kilometer double-circuit 69 KV transmission line is under construction.

This line will link the vessel to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) New Georgetown Substation.

GPL’s Acting Chief Executive Officer has confirmed that the construction of the transmission line is advancing as planned.

At the New Georgetown Substation, additional works are underway to finalize the connections necessary to integrate the ship’s power supply into the national grid.

These tasks are projected to be completed by December 14.

The deployment of the second power ship is part of a broader government initiative to improve the reliability and capacity of Guyana’s electricity supply.

Recent measures include the installation of 10 megawatts of emergency power earlier this year, the operationalization of 46.5 megawatts at the Garden of Eden power plant in October 2022, and the procurement of 28.9 megawatts of additional power-generating equipment in Colombia.

The second power ship is expected to provide much-needed relief to citizens, particularly during the holiday season when energy demand typically increases.
