Second Edition of One Guyana Basketball League Set to Launch

By Tyriq Walters

The Guyana Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), in collaboration with the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of Sport, has announced the launch of the second edition of the One Guyana Basketball League.

The league will kick off in August and is expected to run through March 2025, featuring a total of over 80 games with two planned breaks.

The games will be held at the National Gymnasium, with selected matches also being live-streamed on the Ministry of Sport’s social media channels.

This season, the league has been streamlined from 14 to 10 teams, introducing a promotion and relegation system to enhance competitive play.

President of GABA, Jermaine Slater, emphasized that this new format is designed to further develop basketball in Guyana and maintain the ministry’s dedication to advancing the sport.

Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., commended the quality of basketball from the previous season and announced plans to secure sponsorships for all teams, aiming to bolster both the players and the sport.

Additionally, Minister Ramson outlined plans to upgrade the lighting at the gymnasium and add a new scoreboard, among other improvements.

The winning team of the tournament will receive one million Guyanese dollars along with a trophy, while the runner-up will take home half that amount.

Last season, the Kitty Campbellville Ravens emerged victorious, defeating the Stabroek Eagles 2-1 in the finals.
