Savannah Adams, Joshua Tappin, and Noelex Holder emerged as the standout athletes at the University of Guyana’s Annual Athletics Championship, held at the Guyana Police Force Ground, Eve Leary.

The championship marked UG’s first inter-faculty competition since the COVID-19 pandemic, with the Faculty of Education and Humanities claiming the overall victory.

Joshua Tappin, representing the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, and Noelex Holder, a national sprinter from the Faculty of Health Sciences, were crowned the best male athletes.

Tappin secured three gold medals, while Holder matched his achievement with three wins of his own.

In the women’s category, Savannah Adams, hailing from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, stood out with two gold medals and one silver.

Vice Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin expressed her support for the athletes, emphasizing the importance of athletics in university life.

She noted the significance of the event as UG’s sports teams make a comeback post-COVID-19.

UG Sports Organizer Jaime Skeete echoed this sentiment, describing the championship as a step in the right direction towards fully reviving university athletics.

The Faculty of Education and Humanities claimed the top spot in the overall standings with 217 points, followed by the Faculty of Natural Sciences with 212 points, and the Faculty of Social Sciences with 190 points.

As UG continues its journey back to normalcy, the athletics championship serves as a testament to the resilience and dedication of its student athletes.
