The 2024 edition of the annual Rupununi Rodeo commenced with great fanfare on Saturday, drawing thousands of locals and visitors from overseas to witness the thrilling events.
The rodeo, held at the Triple R Ranch in Lethem, Region Nine, saw various groups putting on captivating performances before the commencement of the main events for the day.
President Irfaan Ali graced the opening ceremony, engaging with numerous attendees and tourists throughout the event.
He even donned a cowboy outfit and made use of the photo booth at the History Artisan and Information Centre, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag, expressed her excitement to participate in one of the region’s largest tourism events.
She highlighted the significance of the rodeo in promoting regional tourism and fostering community engagement.
Meanwhile, Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, reflected on the rodeo’s historical roots, tracing back to the mid-20th century when vaqueros competed in various skills.
She emphasized the event’s enduring popularity and its role in showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The rodeo featured a range of exhilarating events, including calf-roping, wild cow milking, bareback bronco riding, and bull riding, captivating the audience with displays of skill and bravery.
As participants showcased their talents in the arena, the excitement and energy of the crowd were palpable, underscoring the enduring appeal of the Rupununi Rodeo as a premier event in Guyana’s cultural calendar.
