The Rotary Club of Georgetown, in partnership with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, hosted a Sports Day dedicated to children with disabilities on Sunday, November 17, at the Bourda Cricket Club Ground.
The event brought together scores of participants from 20 homes, offering activities designed to promote inclusivity and celebrate the abilities of children with disabilities.
The fun-filled day featured 50- and 80-meter races for boys and girls, a 25-meter assisted walk, limited mobility and wheelchair races, and musical chairs.
Additional attractions, such as face painting, added to the excitement.
Held biennially, the Sports Day underscores the Rotary Club’s commitment to its motto, “Service Above Self,” by creating opportunities for children with special needs to engage in enjoyable and meaningful activities.
President of the Rotary Club, Natasha Veira, emphasized the event’s significance in fostering joy and participation for these children, while Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, used the occasion to launch her ministry’s “Wish Upon a Star” initiative.
This program seeks to reach out to children with special needs during the holiday season, spreading love and joy through various activities.
The collaborative effort between the ministry and the Rotary Club received commendation for its positive impact, as children from across Guyana enjoyed the inclusive and celebratory environment.
