Robbery at Regional Democratic Council: Millions Stolen

Region Six Chairman David Armogan (Guyana Times)

On Wednesday, armed bandits targeted the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) building in New Amsterdam, Berbice, stealing millions of dollars earmarked for employee salaries. During the robbery, a security guard was brutally attacked and restrained, while the assailants made off with nearly $50 million. The stolen funds were intended to pay ten workers in the region.

The injured guard, 60-year-old Suresh Sooknanan, recounted that four unidentified men entered the compound through the eastern fence, and he was struck on the forehead. He managed to inform his colleagues only after the perpetrators had fled.

Later in the day, police engaged suspected robbers in a chase near Heatburn, East Bank of Berbice. Gunshots were heard, leading to the discovery of an abandoned vehicle. One occupant was fatally shot in the head, and the other attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended.

The detained suspect is believed to be linked to the RDC robbery.

Investigations are currently underway.
