Road Safety Month is underway in Guyana, marked by a commitment to cultivating a safety-first culture on the country’s roadways.
Under the theme “Road Safety is Not a Slogan, It’s a Way of Life, Respect the Road,” this year’s Road Safety Month emphasizes the need for a cultural shift in attitudes toward road usage.
Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn highlights the focus on the younger population to instill responsible road behavior.
As part of the month-long observance, a “Train the Trainers” workshop will be conducted for 160 teachers from region three schools, integrating road safety education into the school curriculum.
Sensitization programs for minibus drivers, especially regarding safe driving at night, are also on the agenda.
All road safety advocacy campaign materials will feature the traffic department’s hotline number, encouraging citizens to report reckless driving promptly.
With 123 fatal accidents and 145 lives lost recorded by the Guyana Police Force this year, the focus is on preventive measures to address reckless and drunk driving, particularly during weekends and nighttime.
Road safety awareness campaigns and proactive measures by authorities aim to foster a safer road environment and reduce accidents.
