Road Safety Awareness Initiatives to Continue in Guyana in 2024

By Fabiana Mcklmon

Coordinator of the Guyana National Road Safety Council, Ramona Doorgen, has affirmed that road safety awareness efforts will persist throughout 2024 and beyond.

She outlined a series of planned activities aimed at continually raising awareness among the Guyanese population about road safety.

Doorgen emphasized that road safety awareness will remain a top priority this year, with ongoing training and monitoring initiatives planned in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force.

She highlighted the importance of sustained efforts to educate citizens and reduce road accidents.

As part of these efforts, the Road Safety Council will continue to work closely with police divisions across the country to conduct the “white night campaign.”

This campaign involves increased police presence on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, targeting peak periods for road accidents.

In preparation for the upcoming global road safety week from May 10 to 14, Doorgen announced a series of activities to be executed through strategic partnerships.

These activities include promotional events, school rallies, and awareness campaigns in collaboration with organizations such as Courts.

A significant campaign launch is scheduled to take place at Stabroek Market, featuring various initiatives aimed at promoting road safety.

Moreover, awareness sessions will be conducted at different schools across all 10 administrative regions of Guyana, engaging students in road safety education and accident prevention measures.

The global road safety week, spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), serves as a vital platform to raise awareness about road safety issues worldwide and promote collaborative efforts to prevent accidents and save lives.

As Guyana continues its commitment to enhancing road safety, these ongoing initiatives underscore the importance of collective action in fostering safer road environments and protecting citizens from harm.
