A concerning rise in the number of young people suffering from heart disease has been highlighted by Dr. Mahendra Carpen, a leading Cardiologist, during a recent episode of Health – Inside Out on Kams TV.
Dr. Carpen pointed out that heart attacks, once predominantly seen in people aged 50 and older, are now increasingly affecting individuals in their 30s and 40s.
This shift marks a significant and alarming change in the prevalence of heart disease in Guyana.
Dr. Carpen, who serves as the Head of Medicine and Cardiology at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), noted that conditions like diabetes and hypertension are the leading causes of cardiovascular disease in the country.
These conditions are often left unchecked, with many individuals only seeking medical attention after a heart attack has occurred.
He emphasized the importance of early intervention, urging Guyanese to take advantage of available healthcare services and undergo regular screenings to prevent heart disease before it becomes life-threatening.
Despite the significant strides made in expanding access to cardiac health services, Dr. Carpen stressed that many people are still not utilizing these resources, which could help identify and treat health issues before they lead to heart attacks.
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in Guyana, underscoring the urgency for better public health awareness and preventive care.
