Rice Farmers to Receive Long-Awaited Payments

By Saskia Warrick

Rice farmers in Guyana are set to finally receive payments owed for rice shipments to Panama in 2018, as announced by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.

Back in 2018, a contract was inked between the Government of Panama and the then APNU+AFC administration for the supply of approximately 9000 tonnes of rice, with the Guyana Rice Development Board overseeing the process.

While a partial payment was made after the rice shipment, the remaining balance, which has accrued significant interest over time, has remained outstanding.

With persistent efforts from the current PPP administration, representation has been made to ensure that farmers receive their long-overdue payments in a timely manner.

Minister Mustapha also highlighted additional government support aimed at bolstering the rice industry.

An allocation of $850 million has been designated to assist farmers in collecting their vouchers, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to alleviating financial burdens and supporting agricultural stakeholders.

Moreover, Mustapha emphasized ongoing efforts to secure new markets for rice farmers, with a substantial budget of $1.3 billion allocated this year to enhance productivity and explore avenues for market expansion.

The announcement marks a significant milestone for rice farmers who have been awaiting compensation for their contributions to the agricultural sector.

As the government continues to prioritize the needs of farmers and invest in the growth and sustainability of the rice industry, stakeholders can anticipate further advancements and support initiatives in the future.
