The Ministry of Health’s eye testing and spectacle voucher programme is making a positive difference for many Guyanese, with the latest outreach bringing much-needed services to the Hadfield-Lodge community.
The initiative, which offers free eye tests and vouchers to assist with the cost of spectacles, continues to expand its reach across the country.
During a visit to the Lodge Health Centre, residents praised the programme for its impact.
The goal is to support the early identification of eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and vision issues that require corrective lenses.
Dr. Judy Bentley-Browne, representing the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of eye care and encouraged residents to take advantage of the services offered.
She highlighted the significance of early diagnosis in preventing long-term vision problems and encouraged the community to spread the word.
Several beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the initiative.
Keith Massaiah, a first-time participant, spoke about the benefits of the programme, while Audrey Arthur highlighted how it would help individuals who might not be able to afford spectacles otherwise.
As part of the initiative, individuals in need receive vouchers valued at $2,500 for eye tests, while those requiring spectacles are provided vouchers worth $15,000 to help cover the costs.
The programme specifically targets youth under the age of 18 and senior citizens over 65.
