By Shawnette Fiedtkou

Residents of Linden, Region 10, have responded positively to President Irfaan Ali’s announcement that the forthcoming Wismar/McKenzie Bridge will be toll-free when it becomes operational in 2026.

This decision has been warmly received by both commuters and local businesses.

The new bridge, which will cost approximately $35 million USD, is set to begin construction soon.

It will feature four lanes and extend 220 meters, incorporating essential safety elements such as adequate lighting.

This infrastructure project is designed to boost connectivity and facilitate trade between Guyana and Brazil, addressing long-standing transportation needs in the area.

The government, in partnership with China Railway Construction (Caribbean), secured the contract for the bridge’s construction in January.

The initiative aims to significantly enhance transportation efficiency and strengthen regional trade relations.

Local drivers and residents have expressed their approval of the toll-free plan, noting the potential economic and practical benefits it will bring to the region. The new bridge is expected to alleviate congestion and improve access, contributing to overall economic growth and development in Linden and surrounding areas.
