The second edition of the Republic Bank and Cricket West Indies ‘Five for Fun’ cricket program has been launched, aiming to engage 1500 youths from 75 schools across Guyana in cricketing activities over the next few months.
The program, designed to nurture grassroots talent and promote cricket at the primary level, was officially inaugurated at Herdmanston Lodge on Tuesday.
Managed by the Guyana Cricket Board with Reon King serving as the national coordinator, the program will see schools competing in zones initially.
Zonal champions will then progress to compete for county titles, and the top three winners will vie for the national festival country champion title.
Harry Dass Ghaness, the Commercial Manager of Republic Bank Guyana Limited, expressed the bank’s commitment to fostering the growth and development of youths through the program, emphasizing the importance of learning and personal growth.
Ronald Williams, Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board, highlighted the enduring partnership between the board and the bank, acknowledging the crucial role of sponsors in supporting cricketing initiatives.
Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle officially declared the 2024 edition of the ‘Five for Fun’ cricket program open, underscoring the positive impact of grassroots programs on the country’s performance in regional events.
This year, the program has expanded to include 20 additional schools, ensuring broader access to cricket at the primary level.
King emphasized that the tournament aims for inclusive participation, with both boys’ and girls’ teams competing from regions 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10.
The ‘Five for Fun’ cricket program not only provides children with opportunities to play cricket but also establishes a player pathway and contributes to coaching development.
Last year’s champions, All Saints Primary School, serve as a testament to the success and impact of the initiative.
