Region Two is emerging as a key area for tourism development, a point emphasized during the launch of Tourism Awareness Month at Lake Mainstay on Saturday.
Kamrul Baksh, Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), spoke about the growing interest in the tourism and hospitality sector in the region.
He noted that in recent engagements with communities such as Capoey and Whyaka, there was significant interest in entering the hospitality industry.
Over 300 individuals expressed a desire for tourism training during a recent outreach initiative.
To support this growth, the GTA has developed a handbook for creating new tourism products and experiences.
Baksh encouraged individuals with ideas for tourism ventures to collaborate with the Ministry of Tourism and the GTA to bring their visions to life.
Omadele George, President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana, highlighted the role of community tourism in Region Two.
He underscored that the warmth and hospitality of local communities are central to the tourism experience, stating that when visitors engage with communities, they should feel an overwhelming sense of belonging.
This year’s Tourism Awareness Month is being celebrated under the theme “A People-Centered Tourism Product: Elevating Our Profile.”
A series of activities are planned throughout the month, including school talks, product launches, GuyExpo, the Global Super League, a Junior Tourism Cooking Showcase, and the Tourism Awards Ceremony.
These events aim to promote Guyana’s tourism sector and its potential for further development.
