By Shawnette Fiedtkou

The Regional Democratic Council of Region Ten has re-activated its Disaster Preparedness and Relief Committee in response to recent flooding and following a directive from Prime Minister Mark Phillips.

The new committee, chaired by Regional Chairman Deron Adams, aims to coordinate a more efficient response to disasters in the future.

With several communities still recovering from excessive rainfall-induced flooding, the Disaster Preparedness and Relief Committee will play a crucial role in mitigating the impact of such events.

Chairman Adams emphasized the importance of the committee, highlighting that it ensures all information and decisions are channeled through a structured process involving experienced individuals who understand the region’s needs.

Speaking at a recent statutory meeting of councilors, Adams stated that the committee will oversee relief efforts to minimize disaster impacts and will involve stakeholders from various relevant bodies.

The committee will establish direct reporting relationships with the Civil Defence Commission and the National Relief Centre to enhance its efforts.

The first meeting of the committee will be scheduled soon. Members include Regional Health Officer Dr. Gregory Harris, Guyana Police Force Regional Commander Guy Nurse, Regional Agricultural Officer Derrick Collins, and Guyana Water Incorporated representative Rawle Friday.

Additional members include Avery Trim, representatives from electricity supply agencies, the Guyana Fire Service, the Linden Chamber of Commerce, religious leaders, welfare and social workers, Region 10 Members of Parliament Devin Sears and Jermain Figueria, and a representative from the Civil Defence Commission.

These efforts underscore Region Ten’s commitment to improving disaster preparedness and response, ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
