As part of its commitment to advancing education and promoting literacy, the Region Ten Department of Education inaugurated the Regional Evolution and Achievement Program (REAP).
This initiative is a key component of the region’s education month activities.
The REAP program, according to Claudel Ally-Bristol, Region Ten’s Literacy Coordinator, is part of a comprehensive strategy to address literacy gaps. It targets students reading two or more grade levels below their chronological age.
The program, administered by the National Literacy Department, operates through in-school sessions, encompassing literacy assessment and a three-tiered reading program supplemented by workbooks.
The three-tier structure provides tailored interventions based on individual student assessments. After a one-minute reading age test, students are placed into tiers corresponding to their reading proficiency. Teachers will then conduct ongoing assessments to monitor progress.
Upon completion of the first level, learners will undergo reassessment to gauge their advancement. Based on their performance, students will either return to regular classrooms or continue in the program for further development.
The Region Ten Education Department expresses confidence in the program’s ability to elevate literacy levels, citing its success in schools nationwide. Regional Education Officer, Nicola Matthews, emphasizes the importance of parental involvement in supporting this initiative.
Under the theme “Investing in people, changing lives,” Education Month in Region Ten is poised to make significant strides in enhancing literacy and educational outcomes.
