Region Ten Health Initiatives for 2025

January 15, 2025

In 2025, Region Ten’s health services will see several key upgrades and new projects, according to Regional Health Officer Dr. Gregory Harris.

Some of the major initiatives include the establishment of a new operating theatre at Kwakwani Hospital, a mobile clinic to reach remote areas, and enhancements to solar systems to improve cold storage.

The region will also commission a new Health Centre in Falmouth, a new mortuary at the Upper Demerara Hospital, and improvements in solid waste management.

Dr. Harris highlighted the rehabilitation of the incinerator at the Linden Hospital Complex and the construction of a new incinerator at Upper Demerara Hospital to improve waste disposal services.

Additionally, mini incinerators are being planned for other locations in 2025.

A significant focus will be on telemedicine, with ten new telemedicine sites set to open, especially in areas without a Medex.

Shanacia Duggan, a nurse at the Muritaro Health Centre, explained how telemedicine allows patients to receive remote consultations with doctors via video chats, helping to improve healthcare accessibility.

Dr. Harris also took the opportunity to recognize the winners of the 2024 Breastfeeding Competition.

Sand Hills Health Centre in the Berbice River took first place, with Bamia Health Centre and Letitia Holder Health Centre securing second and third place, respectively.

These improvements aim to expand healthcare access, improve services, and support better health outcomes across Region Ten.
