Police in Region Six have reported a significant milestone in road safety, with a notable 50 percent reduction in accidents recorded so far this year compared to the same period last year.

Senior Superintendent Charles Hooke, the Divisional Traffic Officer for Region 6, credited this decrease to the rigorous enforcement efforts undertaken by law enforcement personnel throughout the region.

Providing an update on the region’s performance on the “Police and You” program via Radio Eve Leary, Superintendent Hooke highlighted the impact of these efforts.

Comparing the figures from January 2024 to the same period in 2023, Superintendent Hooke revealed that the region had seen 47 reported accidents, marking a 50% decrease from the 97 accidents recorded in January 2023.

Superintendent Hooke emphasized that this achievement was not coincidental but rather the direct result of continuous and dedicated work carried out by law enforcement personnel.

He cited the implementation of robust traffic campaigns, exercises targeting speeding and drinking and driving, as well as educational lectures delivered to schools, drivers, and religious organizations as contributing factors to this success.

Despite these achievements, Superintendent Hooke acknowledged persistent challenges, particularly concerning motorcyclists flouting safety regulations and vehicles equipped with unauthorized lights and tinted windshields.

However, he noted that the introduction of the “Eyes in the Sky” campaign had resulted in charging 175 individuals, primarily motorcyclists, whose reckless behavior posed a threat to road safety.

Looking ahead, Superintendent Hooke affirmed the Division Traffic Office’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening their enforcement efforts, ensuring the continuation of rigorous measures to enhance road safety in Region Six.
