Region Six to Begin Hemp Cultivation with Small Farmers

Hemp cultivation is set to begin in Region Six, Guyana, as part of a broader agricultural initiative aimed at boosting economic development in the region.

The Ministry of Agriculture has identified over 30,000 acres of land for the cultivation of hemp, corn, and sugarcane.

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo emphasized that small farmers will play a pivotal role in the hemp industry.

Each farmer will be allocated one to two acres of land to start production, ensuring equitable participation in the sector.

An implementation committee has been formed to oversee the development of the allocated lands, ensuring that the cultivation process adheres to established guidelines and regulations.

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha noted that the reintroduction of sugarcane farming is also generating interest among regional farmers.

Efforts are underway to revitalize sugar production, with farmers expressing enthusiasm for returning to the industry.

Approximately $2 billion has been allocated in the national budget to support these initiatives, which aim to diversify Guyana’s agricultural base, create employment, and strengthen the local economy.

The hemp industry is expected to offer significant economic advantages, ranging from the production of textiles and bioplastics to construction materials and health products.
