Police in Region Six have reported a significant milestone in road safety, with a notable 53 percent reduction in road accidents recorded so far this year compared to the same period last year.

Region Six Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus highlighted that despite the overall reduction, accidents involving motorcycles have significantly contributed to the road fatalities in the region this year.

Out of the eight fatalities recorded in 2024, six involved motorcyclists.

Commander Bacchus attributed most of the fatal accidents to reckless road use, particularly during nighttime when most of these incidents occurred.

The division has been proactive in its efforts to prevent an increase in fatal accidents, implementing several enforcement exercises to curb reckless driving and improve road safety.

One of the key measures has been the “Eye in the Sky” exercise, which has enabled the Traffic Department in Region Six to better monitor traffic congestion and identify areas where accidents are prevalent.

This surveillance has been instrumental in their strategic planning and enforcement efforts.

The police’s ongoing initiatives and stringent enforcement are aimed at sustaining and further improving road safety in Region Six, ensuring that the number of fatal accidents continues to decline.
