By Nakasia Logan

The Region 9 Police Division has witnessed a significant decline in serious crimes but noted a slight uptick in sexual offenses, according to recent reports.

The regional capital of Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo, particularly Lethem, has experienced a notable reduction in serious crimes such as larceny, robbery under arms, and robbery with violence, as highlighted by Police Commander Region Nine, Senior Superintendent Raphael Rose.

In an interview with Stan Gouveia on Radio Eve Leary, Commander Rose emphasized the sense of safety prevailing in the region.

He noted that individuals can now freely shop and move about without fear of theft or violence, attributing this positive trend to concerted efforts by law enforcement agencies and community engagement initiatives.

However, amidst the decline in serious crimes, concerns have been raised regarding sexual offenses, primarily within some villages of Region Nine.

Commander Rose acknowledged this issue, stressing the need for continuous community sensitization to address such crimes effectively.

Commander Rose reported a reduction in reports of sexual offenses thus far in the year, attributing it to ongoing efforts to sensitize communities and encourage adherence to the law.

He emphasized the importance of moving forward and abandoning outdated customs that may contribute to such offenses.

To tackle sexual offenses effectively, the Region Nine Police Division has adopted a comprehensive stakeholder approach.

This strategy involves engaging community leaders, organizations, and law enforcement agencies to address the root causes of sexual assault and provide support to victims.

Commander Raphael Rose’s proactive measures underscore the commitment of the Region Nine Police Division to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents, while also addressing the challenges posed by sexual offenses in the region.
