The government has announced plans to enhance agricultural infrastructure in Region 5 through the construction of new canals, pump stations, and drainage systems.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve irrigation and water management for farmers and residents in the region.

Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, outlined the project during a recent visit to Prospect, where he addressed farmers about the medium and long-term plans for the area.

The development will include the construction of several canals modeled after the Hope Canal, along with the installation of irrigation pumps to ensure consistent water flow for farming activities.

Tenders for the Region 5 projects are expected to be issued in the coming week, with initial work focusing on the installation of a pump at Cottage.

This pump will play a crucial role in supporting the long-term irrigation needs of the community.

The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) has also been tasked with carrying out medium-term works across the Mahaica-Berbice region, including the clearance of key agricultural areas to benefit farmers in the short term.

In addition to addressing drainage and irrigation concerns, the government is also working with local farmers to resolve issues related to rice and cash crop production.

The initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the agricultural sector and improve living conditions for residents in rural communities.
