Region 3 Traffic Officers Advocate Against Underage Use of Electric Bikes for Schoolchildren

By Fabiana McKlmon

Region 3 Traffic Officer Lance Corporal Teniesha Punch, stationed at the Leonora Police Station, urges parents to refrain from allowing underage children to use electric bikes to commute to school.

Punch emphasizes the potential risks associated with underage children using electric bikes, citing the possibility of minor or major accidents.

She urges parents to heed this warning and consider the safety of their children.

Inspector Alex Roberts, Deputy Traffic Officer of Region 3, announces plans to conduct educational sessions in schools within the region.

These sessions aim to raise awareness about road safety and discourage underage children from using electric bikes.

One of the primary concerns highlighted by law enforcement officials is the lack of helmet usage and limited knowledge of road safety among children who use electric motorcycles.

They stress the importance of protecting the lives of young individuals through education and awareness of the dangers involved.

In May 2023, legislation was passed to regulate the use of electric bikes in Guyana, mandating registration and setting a minimum age requirement of 16 years to obtain a provisional permit for operating such cycles.

The police force urges the public and parents to prioritize the safety of children, educate them about road safety, and discourage underage use of electric bikes.
