Essequibians are set to benefit from a series of agricultural and drainage interventions following a two-day outreach by Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo and other senior government officials.
These efforts aim to transform the lives of residents in Region 2.
During a press conference, Dr. Jagdeo addressed the concerns raised by residents regarding the state of the Pomeroon River and the need for drainage and irrigation interventions.
He assured that additional resources are being allocated to address these issues.
Two more excavators are on their way to join the ongoing work in the region.
Currently, the government is investing 2.4 billion dollars in drainage and irrigation for the area.
Since taking office, they have provided two excavators and two pontoons for continuous dredging and empoldering efforts.
Farmers and residents also requested planting materials, and Dr. Jagdeo outlined a comprehensive plan to meet these needs.
This includes contracting a group from India’s Teri Institute to establish a tissue culture lab capable of producing four million plants.
The government is also expanding all nurseries to support agricultural growth in Essequibo and across the country.
Tissue culture involves growing plant or animal cells in an artificial environment, allowing them to survive and thrive.
This method will significantly enhance the region’s agricultural capabilities.
While in Region 2, Dr. Jagdeo met with the business community and youths to hear their concerns.
In response, he has directed follow-up actions by the Ministers of Industry and Commerce, Human Services, the Board of Industrial Training, and the Guyana Online Academy of Learning.
