In an electrifying clash at the Demerara Cricket Venue, defending champions Regal Masters showcased their indomitable spirit, orchestrating a spectacular comeback to claim the over 40 title in the Georgetown Softball Cricket League-organized Prime Minister Cup.
The final match was pushed into a super over after Regal forced a tie against Ariel Masters.
Batting first, Ariel Masters posted a formidable 200-6 from their allotted 20 overs, propelled by strong performances from Rawle Reid and Samuel Kingston, both notching up forties. Sheldon Adams and Patrick Khan also contributed with thirties.
Regal’s bowlers, Lakeram Roopnarine and Ehwaaz Baksh, took two wickets each.
Regal faced a tough challenge in their pursuit, losing their first six wickets quickly.
Despite the dire situation, Eyaaz Mohamed’s 35 and crucial contributions from several players brought them to the cusp of victory, finishing at 200 for 9, just one run shy of triumph.
Ariel Masters’ Manoj Arjune (3-27) and Sherwin Hubberth (3-33) delivered commendable performances but couldn’t contain Regal’s determined pursuit.
In the super over, Regal maintained their composure to clinch a comfortable victory.
Meanwhile, in the Legends category, Regal Legends secured their fourth consecutive championship by defeating New York Softball Cricket League Legends with an eight-wicket margin.
Regal posted an impressive 180, led by Uniss Yusuf’s 68 and Ramesh Narine’s unbeaten 66. New York gave a valiant effort, reaching 179-5 before running out of overs.
In the Open category, Ariel Knight Riders successfully defended their title with a 54-run triumph.
Ricardo Poloram’s explosive 82 set the foundation for their victory, while Quentin Sampson’s aggressive 77 sealed the deal.
In the female category, 4R Lioness clinched a 44-run victory over Highway Challengers to retain their title.
Regal Legends claimed a million-dollar prize, while the Masters and Open winners took home $600,000 each.
The ladies’ category awarded a first prize of $300,000.
