-Ahead of reopening

Schools across Region Six are preparing for reopening on Monday, with only minor finishing touches being carried out at some institutions.
This is according to Regional Chairman Junior Basant, who, along with Member of Parliament Zamal Hussain, continued visits to schools in the region on Thursday to assess their level of preparedness and ensure they are ready to welcome students for the new school term.
“Thus far we’ve checked quite a number of schools yesterday and we continue to do that today. Schools are in utmost preparation. A lot of teachers are in school right now, we have service providers in schools right now providing service to aid in the reopening so we can have a smooth transition out of the holiday period and back into the regular school session,” he said.
He says minor touches are being implemented on the ground, with teachers also ensuring that classrooms are child-friendly and conducive to learning.
According to him, several works are ongoing to ensure that not only classrooms are prepared, but the overall infrastructure of the schools is also in good condition.
“We have all the classrooms being repainted, furniture being repainted or replaced, we have guttering happening at schools, we have pressure washing happening at schools and we have the compounds being slashed and well kept. We’re just trying to get not just the classroom prepared but the entirety of the school prepared so that when students come back, they come back for the full experience without any hindrances or without any construction work being done,” he said.
Basant noted too that teachers underwent continuous training and professional development programs throughout the two-month period, facilitated by the Department of Education through the Ministry of Education, to ensure their preparedness for the classroom.
