Guyana secured three semifinal spots on Friday at the Suriname International Open 2024, currently being held in Paramaribo, thanks to stellar performances by its players.
Top mixed doubles pair Akili Haynes and Priyanna Ramdhani showcased their skill and teamwork, defeating Suriname’s Danny Chen and Pricila Tjitrodipo in straight sets.
Their quarterfinal victory, with scores of 21-15 and 24-22, earned them a place in the semifinals.
Priyanna Ramdhani, Guyana’s top female player, continued her impressive run in the singles category.
She overwhelmed Suriname’s Erisa Bleau with a commanding 21-8, 21-18 win, cementing her spot in the semifinals.
Ramdhani also excelled in the women’s doubles event, teaming up with Trinidadian Chequeda de Boulet.
Together, they overcame the Surinamese duo of Erisa Bleau and Kayleigh Moenne in a competitive match.
With these achievements, Ramdhani is guaranteed at least a bronze medal in each category she competes in and has a shot at gold if she advances to the finals.
Guyana’s contingent, comprising Akili Haynes, Priyanna Ramdhani, Nkosi Beaton, Frank Waddell, and Jonathan Debidin, is making a strong showing at the tournament, which features singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events.
The competition began on Wednesday and continues through the weekend.
