Public Works Minister Juan Edghill has firmly dismissed allegations made by Opposition MP Anette Ferguson concerning the use of funds for the $15.8 billion Government Office Complex.

In a recent media statement, Ferguson accused the government of diverting funds intended for the office complex to construct the Sheraton Four Point Hotel.

Minister Edghill refuted these claims, clarifying that the project is indeed an office complex and not a hotel.

Addressing concerns about the project’s transparency, Edghill emphasized that if there were any secrecy involved, he would not have publicly shared details, including the location of the construction site.

As of September 2024, he stated that the project is approximately 6% complete, with an anticipated completion date set for August 2026.

The Minister explained that there was a delay between the signing of the contract and the issuance of the commencement order, noting that much of the work currently being done is offsite.

He detailed the complexities of the project, including the extensive use of concrete piles instead of wooden ones, which are necessary for ensuring a solid foundation.

Once completed, the Government Office Complex is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and parking difficulties for citizens accessing government services.

The facility’s strategic location will feature three entry points connected to major roadways, including the Demerara Harbour Bridge, the Ogle East Bank bypass, and Heroes Highway.
