Public Hearings to Address Public Assistance Matters in Region 10

The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region 10 has passed a motion to hold public hearings to address issues related to the removal and non-acceptance of residents from the public assistance program.

Regional Chairman Deron Adams announced this initiative following numerous complaints from residents.

During the latest statutory meeting of councilors, Chairman Adams raised the motion to host public hearings for individuals who have been removed from the public assistance program or those still awaiting acceptance.

The decision comes in response to reports of children and persons with permanent disabilities being removed from this economic support.

Adams stated that a date for these hearings will soon be announced on the RDC’s page, allowing residents to present their cases.

He emphasized the importance of proper ventilation of these issues and stated that the hearings would enable residents to discuss their situations and seek redress.

The motion received unanimous support from all councilors. However, Chairman Adams acknowledged that public assistance is not intended to be a lifelong benefit.

He highlighted that the program requires periodic reviews to ensure continued eligibility and that it should not be automatically renewed.

Public assistance is a temporary financial aid designed to help the infirm, aged, disabled, orphaned, persons affected by HIV, and others who cannot adequately maintain their households.

The program involves a thorough review process where applicants are interviewed by officers, and decisions are made by the Local Board of Guardians.

Currently, public assistance stands at $19,000 per month.
