In a continued effort to raise awareness and engage the youth in understanding the Guyana/Venezuela border controversy, a panel discussion and public awareness session were conducted at The Bishops’ High School.
Students from various schools, including Brickdam, Lodge, St. Roses High, and Campbeville Secondary Schools, participated in the event.
The panelists for this session included Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, Advisor on Borders to the Government of Guyana Carl Greenidge, and former academic Dr. Mark Kirton.
The students, eager to gain clarity on the matter, raised questions, including concerns about the increasing number of Venezuelan migrants entering Guyana.
During the session, a student from Bishops High School asked about the government’s stance on the influx of Venezuelan immigrants and whether it poses a threat to national security.
In response, Carl Greenidge emphasized the importance of ensuring that individuals entering the country are treated fairly and not discriminated against based on their foreign status.
He noted the need for a humane approach, highlighting that Guyanese citizens also face challenges when living in foreign lands.
The government reiterated its condemnation of the inhumane treatment of Venezuelans in Guyana and affirmed its commitment to preventing xenophobia.
Students were encouraged to remain vigilant and build on the knowledge gained from the engagement.
This public awareness initiative aims to empower students with information about the border controversy and foster a sense of responsibility among the youth in understanding and contributing to national discussions.
