PSC condemns threats to burn ExxonMobil premises, intimidate police

The Private Sector Commission (PSC) has strongly condemned reported threats to burn ExxonMobil’s premises and intimidate members of the Guyana Police Force, warning that such actions threaten national peace, public safety and economic stability.

In a statement on Monday, the Commission said political grievances or disagreements with court decisions cannot justify threats, violence or the destruction of property.

The PSC stressed that private businesses have no role in determining bail decisions or directing criminal proceedings and should not become targets of political confrontation.

“No worker should have to fear going to work. No business owner should have to watch years of sacrifice and investment destroyed because someone wishes to make a political point,” the Commission stated.

It called on political parties, elected officials and influential public figures to unequivocally condemn threats of violence, regardless of their source.

The Commission also urged the Guyana Police Force to promptly investigate credible threats, protect those at risk and hold offenders accountable under the law.

While reaffirming citizens’ rights to peaceful protest and freedom of expression, the PSC warned that these freedoms must never be used to justify intimidation or destruction.
