Today, NCN News ventured to Everton, Berbice, to observe the ongoing preparations for the installation of a power ship.

At the site in Everton, significant groundwork is underway, including land clearing and the installation of utility poles, to pave the way for the arrival of the power ship.

This location has been deemed ideal for docking the vessel.

NCN spoke with Ravindra Jagnandan, Zone Manager for GPL Berbice, who provided insights into the project’s progress.

Jagnandan highlighted the necessity of building a network to connect the power barge to the existing grid.

The ship will dispatch 69,000 kilovolts, requiring the construction of a new transmission line to facilitate power distribution to various load centers across Berbice and Demerara.

By tapping into existing transmission lines, the aim is to minimize power outages caused by generation shortfalls.

On April 13, Guyana Power and Light finalized a contract with Urbacon Concession Investments for the lease of the power ship for a two-year period.

The agreement encompasses operations and maintenance services, ensuring the efficient functioning of the power ship during its tenure.

As preparations continue at Everton, Berbice, for the installation of the power ship, the project signifies a significant step towards enhancing the reliability of electricity supply in the region.
