After a five-year construction period, the Mazaruni Prison expansion project is approaching completion, with expectations that work could conclude by the end of the year. Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn provided an exclusive update to NCN News.
The Mazaruni Prison Phase 2 project, initially aimed at expanding and enhancing the existing infrastructure, has encountered some challenges that have affected its progress.
Minister Benn revealed that the project is currently at approximately 90 percent completion, but certain hurdles have necessitated adjustments in the construction plan.
The Minister explained that significant adjustments were made in the layout of the building.
Originally designed as a four-story structure, it was divided into two buildings, with the site located further away from the main buildings.
This adjustment has raised concerns regarding security, surveillance, and access, necessitating the construction of a roadway and a bridge.
Despite these challenges, Minister Benn expressed confidence in the project’s successful management.
He noted that some of the challenges and issues faced were inherited from the previous coalition administration.
Specifically, Minister Benn mentioned a discrepancy in the initial sighting of the project, which has posed challenges that the current administration is working to address.
Minister Benn clarified that due to funding constraints, the project will not be able to proceed with additional construction beyond the two buildings in phase two.
Phase one of the project has been completed, and the current phase is encountering specific challenges that are being carefully evaluated and addressed.
In 2017, four billion dollars were allocated for the expansion of the Mazaruni prison, with the aim of accommodating 400 prisoners.
The project represents a significant investment in fortifying the security infrastructure of the prison, ultimately contributing to a safer and more controlled environment within the facility.
