Prison Service rejects claims Mohamed was confined for nearly 24 hours

The Guyana Prison Service has rejected claims that remanded Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed was confined to his holding area for 23 hours and 50 minutes, citing official records showing he spent more than nine hours outside his cell on Sunday.

In a statement, the Prison Service disclosed that Mohamed received visits from relatives and attorneys, made three telephone calls to family members, attended a welfare counselling session and underwent a medical examination.

He was also provided with meals delivered by relatives, reading and writing materials, and medication for a cough.

According to the Prison Service, Mohamed spent approximately nine hours and 20 minutes outside his holding area on November 1.

Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot also visited Mohamed that evening, during which the remanded prisoner reportedly indicated that he had no complaints.

The Prison Service maintains that Mohamed is being treated in accordance with established procedures and applicable legal standards.
