The inaugural Prime Minister’s T10 Softball Cricket Competition for Sub Region Two, Region Ten, is set to kick off with an opening ceremony in Kwakwani this Saturday.
The tournament will feature sixteen teams from the sub-region competing across various venues every weekend from July 27 to August 25.
Coordinator Odessa Jones explained that the tournament aims to decentralize sporting activities, promote sport-tourism in the sub-region, and enhance the economic potential of the host communities.
The competition will include a round-robin format during the group stages, with eight teams from Upper Demerara and eight from Upper Berbice, divided into groups of four.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, culminating in the finals.
The opening ceremony will include a march past, a band performance, and the attendance of Prime Minister Mark Phillips.
Co-coordinator and youth officer Kenisha Dey-Venture highlighted the event’s significance for youth and sports development, emphasizing its role in teaching teamwork skills and fostering community engagement.
Teams will compete for a total prize pool exceeding one million dollars.
The winning team will receive five hundred thousand dollars, while second and third place will earn three hundred thousand and two hundred thousand dollars respectively.
