Prime Minister Mark Phillips Addresses OAS on Venezuela Border Controversy

Prime Minister Mark Phillips delivered a crucial address during an Extraordinary Special Session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Wednesday.

The session was convened at the request of the Government of Guyana to provide an update on the ongoing controversy with Venezuela.

In his address, Prime Minister Phillips emphasized that Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo Region of Guyana poses a direct threat to Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He assured representatives at the OAS session that Guyana is diligently following the necessary legal procedures to bring an end to the border dispute with Venezuela.

Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, reiterated the organization’s support for a peaceful resolution of the controversy in accordance with the principles of international law.

He emphasized that the OAS values the message of peace and will not engage in any actions that threaten the peace and security of the region.

Prime Minister Phillips expressed gratitude on behalf of the people and government of Guyana for the OAS’s support, as well as that of the international community.

Several members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), along with the United States and Brazil, reaffirmed their unwavering support for Guyana and advocated for a peaceful settlement of the controversy in alignment with international law during the meeting.
