A total of 242 Amerindian villages across Guyana have received approximately $395 million in funding under the Presidential Grant program in 2024.

This initiative aims to improve the living standards and economic stability of indigenous communities across the country.

Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, highlighted the positive impact of the annual grants, noting that they have significantly boosted food security in these villages.

Hundreds of social and economic projects, ranging from infrastructure improvements to community development, have been completed thanks to the funding.

Minister Sukhai praised the role of village councils in successfully managing the grants and ensuring that the benefits reach the communities.

She pointed out that the investments have brought stability to village economies, helping to foster growth and self-sufficiency.

The Minister also shared success stories from Massara Village in the North Rupununi, Region Nine, where the community has made notable advancements.

These include the construction of a swimming pool, an extension to the sports pavilion, and the fencing of the play field.

Sukhai emphasized that such achievements are a testament to the successful partnership between the government and Amerindian villages, with the PPP/Civic administration investing in rural communities to promote development.

Since taking office in 2020, the government has substantially increased the Presidential Grant allocations.

Smaller villages, which previously received around $500,000, now benefit from $1 million annually.

Larger villages that used to receive between $1.5 million and $1.8 million are now granted $2 million or more each year.

The Presidential Grant program continues to play a crucial role in improving the lives of Amerindian communities, providing them with the resources needed for sustainable growth and development.
