President Dr. Irfaan Ali says the Commission of Inquiry into the MV Barima tragedy must uncover the truth and recommend measures to prevent a similar tragedy from ever recurring.
The Commission was formally sworn in today paving the way for the independent investigation to begin.
The Head of State told the Commission that the July 18 tragedy has brought “immeasurable grief” to the nation and to bereaved families and that there is a solemn responsibility to provide answers to those affected.
“Our nation deserves a full, fair, and impartial account of what occurred, why it occurred, and what must be done to ensure that such a tragedy is never repeated,” he said.
The President expressed confidence that the investigation will bring clarity, establish accountability, and deliver meaningful recommendations to strengthen the future of maritime safety in Guyana.
He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to providing the Commission with the necessary administrative, technical, financial, and logistical resources to ensure it can effectively carry out and complete its mandate.
“Every resource required to facilitate a thorough, professional, and independent inquiry will be made available,” the president said.
The five-member international panel is chaired by retired Belizean Justice Godfrey Smith and comprises Dr. Andrei Jesse Anonski of Poland, Captain Hamada Fouda of Jamaica, Nyree Dawn Alfonso of Trinidad and Tobago, and Rear Admiral (Ret’d) Hayden Pritchard of Trinidad and Tobago.
