President Dr. Irfaan Ali has tasked the Law Reform Commission with drafting new legislation specifically for Silica City, Guyana’s forthcoming ‘smart’ urban center.
The President expressed hope that this critical work will be completed by the first quarter of 2025.
On Tuesday, President Ali reappointed and swore in the remaining members of the Law Reform Commission: Teni Housty, Clarissa Riehl, and Deenawatie Panday.
They join previously sworn-in members Emily Dodson and Lenox Shuman, completing the commission.
The President emphasized the importance of the commission’s role in identifying and addressing existing legal gaps, particularly in light of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and digitalization.
The legislation for Silica City will be essential for managing and protecting the environment within the new urban center, located along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
As Guyana progresses towards a more digitalized economy, President Ali stressed the need for the Commission to evaluate potential challenges and devise effective solutions to ensure the country’s legal framework remains robust and up-to-date.
The Law Reform Commission is responsible for aligning Guyana’s laws with international legislative standards, ensuring that the country’s legal infrastructure supports its evolving needs.
